Graduate Development Program

FAQs

About the program

Can I choose the Agency or my work area?

As part of a generalist program, you won’t get to choose your agency or work area, but may have the opportunity to rotate to different areas.

Are the Graduate roles fixed-term or permanent?

Currently all our roles are fixed-term for a period of two years.

Are the graduate roles full-time, or can I work part-time?

We offer flexible working arrangements in the Tasmanian State Service which can be discussed at Agency interview stage.

When does the Program start?

Successful applicants will commence work in their Agencies around February 2025, with the structured learning element of the program to commence in March 2025.

Can I be offered more than one position?

There is a chance that following interviews, you may be the top applicant for multiple graduate positions. In this case you’ll be contacted and given a choice as to where you would prefer to work.

I live interstate, and I have been offered a position, do you offer a relocation allowance?

No, it is not possible for us to provide a relocation allowance to successful applicants.

I accepted a role with the Program and resigned, am I able to be placed back into the pool to be considered for other opportunities?

No, once you accept an offer and then resign from the State Service, you will no longer be a part of the graduate pool for consideration of other vacancies. If you resign from the State Service then your place in the Program is automatically terminated.

I accepted a role within the Program and was successful in accepting another role in the State Service, prior to the end of the Program, what happens to my place?

We encourage you to discuss completing the learning and development element of the Program with your new manager and make the most of your access to this professional development.

I’m interested in completing the Tasmanian Legal Practice Course, and participating in the Tasmanian State Service Graduate Development Program, is this possible?

It is expected that successful applicants prioritise attendance of the learning and development offered by the Program, but this can be discussed with your home Agency should you secure a position.

Eligibility

I am on a Student Visa and I am currently applying for a working Visa, what will this mean for my application?

You’ll need an active visa that allows you to work fulltime in Australia until 2027. Visit the Department of Home Affairs website for more information.

I require sponsorship for my Visa, do you offer this?

No, unfortunately we are unable to offer sponsorship of a visa for positions within the Tasmanian State Service Graduate Development Program.

How do I know if my degree is relevant?

We are seeking graduates from across the full range of academic disciplines, which means all degrees are relevant.

However, we will ask you to identify your field of education in the application form. Refer to the Australian Classification of Education (ASCED) Field of Education Types to see what category your degree fits within.

Is the Program for UTAS students only or can interstate graduates apply?

We welcome graduates from all universities.

I have a disability. What adjustments can I expect during recruitment?

If you require additional support to allow you to complete the assessment process, you can request an adjustment throughout each step of the recruitment process. If this is something you might require, you will have the opportunity to note this through your online application and one of our Graduate Recruitment Coordinators will get in touch to let you know what each stage of the assessment involves and discuss your needs.
