Defining disability
Disability is a term that includes people with physical, mental, sensory, and/or intellectual limitations, restrictions or impairments and can include conditions such as chronic illnesses. Disability is an individual experience and can differ greatly from one person to the next.
A person may be born with a disability or may develop one later in life due to illness, accident, injury or ageing. Many disabilities are not visible, and some may only affect a person from time to time. A person’s experience of disability is also affected by environmental factors such as community attitudes and the opportunities, services and support they can access, as well as by personal factors.
Disability is more common than you may think and it is likely you know a person with disability.
Around 1 in 5 people in Australia have a disability. That is about 4.4 million people.
It is likely that most people will experience some form of disability – temporary or permanent – at some point in their life.
The Tasmanian Government is committed to supporting a fully inclusive society that values and respects all people with disability as equal and contributing members of the community.
