Identified and tagged positions
While we encourage you to apply for all our jobs, as an Aboriginal person, you might be interested in working in a job that has a focus on working with Aboriginal Communities and or Aboriginal programs, projects and services.
Some of our jobs work with or provide a service to Aboriginal people, as well as develop policies and programs that primarily impact Aboriginal People. These positions are called ‘Identified’ and ‘Tagged’ Positions.
Identified positions have duties which primarily relate to Aboriginal people and can only be filled by Aboriginal people.
There is an eligibility process (see Aboriginal eligibility below) that you will need to go through to confirm your eligibility to be employed in an Identified position.
Tagged positions have duties that require the applicant to be able to effectively and sensitively communicate with Aboriginal people, as well as have the knowledge and understanding of contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and society.
If this sounds like something you would be interested in, you can look out for positions on the jobs website or on some agency Registers. We will endeavour to post any positions here when they become available. We are also working on developing a job alert which will allow you to subscribe to receive email notifications when these jobs are advertised.
Aboriginal identified positions and employment registers
We will advertise Aboriginal identified and tagged positions on the jobs website when they arise. We also advertise the following Aboriginal Identified positions on our employment registers all year round. This is a good place to look if you are looking for short-term opportunities.

Aboriginal eligibility
If you are applying for an Aboriginal identified position, your eligibility will need to be verified. This process is required to determine eligibility to participate in all Tasmanian State Service Aboriginal programs and services, including Aboriginal identified positions.
You only need to verify your eligibility once. When you have completed the eligibility process, your verification is kept in a central database and we can refer back to this without you needing to provide it each time you apply for an identified position.
Aboriginal eligibility requires that you
- have Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander ancestry
- self-identify as an Aboriginal person and/or Torres Strait Islander
- are recognised as an Aboriginal person and/or Torres Strait Islander by the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander community in which you live or have lived.
Eligibility form
If you haven't been through the eligibility process before, you will need to submit the eligibility form which can be found by visiting the Office of Aboriginal Affairs page. Often this form will be included on the job or register advert and you will be asked to submit it with your application.
The form includes a statutory declaration and a confirmation statement recognising your Aboriginality and acknowledging that you belong to an Aboriginal Community from an Aboriginal organisation.
If you haven’t previously verified your eligibility you need to be aware that finalising the eligibility process may take some time so be sure to allow for this.
