The following traineeships will be offered in 2026

Aboriginal Students

We welcome all eligible and interested applicants to apply for a traineeship, including those with diverse skills, experiences, and backgrounds. There is one targeted role for Aboriginal students in 2026: Aboriginal Trainee Wildlife Officer. We encourage Aboriginal students to apply for all our roles, too!

The TSS recognises the unique knowledge, skills and experiences Aboriginal people bring to our workplaces. We are committed to increasing the number of Aboriginal people employed across our agencies, which are currently underrepresented by Aboriginal people.

Trainee Administration Officer

We have multiple Trainee Administration Officer roles available in 2026, located in Hobart!

About you

If you like interacting with people and working on computers, and you are interested to try out an office based workplace, then an Administrative traineeship could be a great option for you.

It doesn’t matter if you have any work experience or not, this traineeship will help you develop the necessary skills to prepare you for work, or further study.

What does the job look like?

As an Administrative trainee, you will be introduced to a wide range of practical skills applicable to many business service/office roles. The work will vary between each traineeship, but the sort of tasks you can expect to do include:

  • Photocopying, filing, sorting mail, booking meetings and other administrative tasks.
  • You will be required to provide a level of customer service, as you may need to provide information and direct inquiries from members of the public, clients and employees. Providing this service may be via the telephone, in person or even via email.
  • Using technology, for data entry, reporting, preparing documents/correspondence, processing payments and handling inquiries.

What qualification will I do?

You will be supported to undertake a Certificate II in Workplace Skills. This course offers practical skills in a wide range of areas that will help you for any job in the future, including communication skills, time management, technology and working with others.

Trainee Visitor Services Officer

Trainee Visitor Services Officer

Certificate II in Workplace Skills

We have one Trainee Visitor Services Officer role in the Parks and Wildlife Division at the Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania, located in Hobart.

What does the job look like?

With mentoring and guidance, undertake the requirements of the training plan and qualification to develop the skills and knowledge to:

  • Assist with the administration and operational maintenance associated with the Divisions file management systems and databases.
  • Provide administrative support to the Section on day to day activities whilst maintaining confidentiality of all information.
  • Answer phone calls, emails and queries from visitors.
  • Assist in continual review and improvement of systems, services and procedures.
  • Prepare routine correspondence and communications as required.
  • Perform any other duties as directed from time to time.

What qualification will I do?

You'll be supported to undertake a Certificate II in Workplace Skills.

Trainee Laboratory Officer

Trainee Laboratory Officer

Certificate II in Workplace Skills

We have one Trainee Laboratory Offer role available in 2026, located in the Animal Health Lab (AHL) in Launceston.

What does the job look like?

With mentoring and guidance, undertake the requirements of the training plan and qualification to develop the skills and knowledge to:

  • Assist with the preparation of materials and undertake routine technical duties in various AHL sections including water microbiology and parasitology.
  • Record routine performance and calibration results of scientific equipment.
  • Record and monitor consumable stocks and supply.
  • Assist with submissions including labelling of samples, allocation of test procedures and entry of test results.
  • Undertake quality system protocols that contribute to external Quality Assurance Programs.

What qualification will I do?

Aboriginal Trainee Wildlife Officer

Aboriginal Trainee Wildlife Officer

Certificate II in Workplace Skills

We have one Aboriginal Trainee Wildlife Offer role available in 2026, located in the Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania, in Hobart. We're looking for a student who is interested in learning about conservation and management of ecosystems and threatened species.

What does the job look like?

With mentoring and guidance, undertake the requirements of the training plan and qualification to develop the skills and knowledge to:

  • Assist with researching and analysing information as part of specific tasks or projects related to conservation and ecosystem management in marine and terrestrial environments.
  • Participate in meetings, conferences and seminars including providing administrative support for these activities.
  • Maintain detailed records in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures.  Undertake data entry associated with record keeping where required.
  • Participate as an effective member of the Traineeship Program by contributing as a team member in improving efficiencies in the implementation of the Department’s conservation programs.
  • Assist with the provision of animal care and husbandry, including observations and record keeping, feeding, handling for routine health monitoring and during veterinary procedures, cleaning and maintenance of enclosures for captive wildlife when required.
  • Operate under appropriate biosecurity and Work Health and Safety (WHS) protocols.
  • Perform any other duties as directed from time to time

Eligibility

In order to be eligible for this traineeship, you'll need to be enrolled in a Tasmanian school and commencing either year 11 or 12 in 2026

Certificate II in Workplace Skills

We have one Trainee Wildlife Offer role available in 2026, located in the Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania, in Hobart. We're looking for a student who is interested in learning about conservation and management of ecosystems and threatened species.

Trainee Finance Officer

Trainee Finance Officer

Certificate II in Workplace Skills

We have one Trainee Finance Officer role in 2026, in the Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania, located in Hobart.

What type of work will I do?

  • Assist with the administration and operational maintenance associated with the Divisions file management systems and databases including checking debtor and creditor details.
  • Provide financial administrative support to the Finance Branch on day-to-day activities whilst maintaining confidentiality of all information.
  • Process routine financial transactions.
  • Assist in continual review and improvement of systems, services and procedures.
  • Prepare routine correspondence and communications to creditors.
  • Communicate with internal and external stakeholder where required.
  • Perform any other duties as directed from time to time.

What qualification will I do?

You will be supported to undertake a Certificate II in Workplace Skills (in Hobart) while you work.
